The journalist and presenter Roberto Brasero is the Honorary Godfather chosen to kick off the most important broccoli production event of the year.
On October 20, we performed the first broccoli harvest with Roberto Brasero, the Honorary Godfather chosen for this occasion. Brasero has been responsible for kicking off the most important broccoli production event of the year in Spain.
The broccoli promotion and healthy habits campaign, held from November 21 to December 4 under the slogan ‘Soy fan de ti’ (I’m a fan of you), aims to promote the consumption of this vegetable and spread its benefits and properties. During the presentation, Roberto Brasero confessed to being a broccoli lover and stated that “it’s broccoli time.”
“We consider the promotion of broccoli and healthy habits essential as a lever for the sector’s growth. We are heading in the right direction, as in the last decade, we have managed to multiply broccoli consumption by ten in Spain. Our current goal is to ensure that there is at least one serving per capita per week,” says Toñi Piernas, president of +Broccoli.
During the day, the godfather, accompanied by the president of +Broccoli, the main sponsor HMCLAUSE, and platinum sponsors Proexport and Cricket, as well as some representatives of our associated companies, toured the entire broccoli planting process.
The first event took place in an idyllic setting, a cultivation field located in Hellín belonging to the broccoli-producing company Cricket. In the words of Juan Marín, general manager of Cricket, “It could not be otherwise; from Cricket, we bet on promoting the first cut of +Broccoli as a crucial moment to start the campaign to encourage and promote broccoli consumption in Spain.”
The itinerary continued with a visit to the research plant of HM.CLAUSE, a leading seed company in R&D internationally, the official sponsor of the campaign. In this way, several representatives of the Board of Directors of +Broccoli learned firsthand about the seed production work, as well as the research carried out to obtain more sustainable seeds that contribute to preserving the environment. Also, HM.CLAUSE values this sponsorship as an action of commitment and cooperation in the progress of agriculture. In the words of Rafael Bonet, general manager of HM.CLAUSE, “For us, as a business unit of the Limagrain group, we are proud to be able to collaborate in the development of our sector and specifically, in a product like broccoli, in which we make a significant global R&D commitment, with the aim of making available to producers varieties that allow more sustainable, profitable, and market-adapted production.”
Proexport has also supported the broccoli consumption promotion campaign with its platinum sponsorship, as the association always supports actions aimed at disseminating and promoting the agricultural sector. “We are very happy with the promotional actions of +Broccoli; the entire origin-producing sector benefits from them, and that is why Proexport gives them all our support,” says Fernando Gómez, director of Proexport.
On the other hand, the president of the broccoli and cauliflower sector of Proexport, Juan Marín, wanted to launch a message of stability, “Despite the fact that we are in a complicated situation, as the heatwave we have suffered in Spain, combined with extreme drought, has collapsed broccoli production over these months, we start a new campaign with good availability and great product quality.”
