Today we interviewed Marcos Martínez from Sacoje Sdad. Coop, an agricultural cooperative with over three decades of experience in cultivating artisanal horticultural products.

  1. How many years have you been cultivating broccoli?

We started growing broccoli practically from the beginning of the cooperative, 34 years ago.

  1. What caught your attention the most about our favorite vegetable?

Above all, we were interested in the high consumption of broccoli in other European countries, and we saw it as an alternative to traditional crops in the area, such as cotton, artichokes, and paprika peppers.

  1. Broccoli is considered by more and more people as the food of the 21st century. How do you think its evolution will be in the coming years?

It is a product that has become essential in our consumption and will continue to grow in Spain.

  1. How do you approach innovation in the field? New products, new cultivation techniques, new tools…

The big challenge for the coming years is how to optimize our yields and costs. We are at a moment where any improvement in the production chain is very important.

  1. Have you noticed a change in society’s eating trends? What has this meant for your production in recent years?

Yes, in general, there is more awareness of eating healthy foods. This has turned broccoli into a pillar of vegetables in nutrition.

We have adapted to the demand of our customers with different packaging and presentation forms.

  1. The agricultural sector has proven to be essential in situations that required greater effort to supply the entire population. How have you perceived this situation?

It is very clear that we are an important part of the food supply. Today we can say that we are proud of everyone in the company because we have seen how all the staff has rallied in very difficult and frightening moments, supporting with their contribution to prevent supply shortages. I know the rest of the sector has experienced it in the same way.

At this moment, I think it is starting to be forgotten, and the feeling on the street is only the rising cost of the shopping basket. This is something that we as producers are also experiencing firsthand, unable to control and always reflecting it below reality.

Now we are planning the new campaign where we have to estimate costs and sales consumption 4 or 5 months in advance without knowing the situation clearly.

  1. How long have you been collaborating with Más Brócoli? And what do you appreciate most about this collaboration?

Since the first day of its inception, we are one of the founding members. We believe that this union of associates has been the best way to make a common effort and bring the great product we have closer to the public.

  1. And finally, any favorite recipe that none of our fans should miss?

Broccoli has countless ways to prepare and consume it, and all of them are excellent. In my opinion, an easy-to-prepare recipe, suitable for all types of diets, and liked by everyone is broccoli, carrot, and chickpea meatballs.
